Samsung's successful marketing strategy in India

Samsung Electronics' share in India's smartphone market is both growing and shrinking, based on different metrics.

Samsung has expanded its volume market shares to 38% in last quarter of 2013 from 32.7% in the first, according to latest IDC data. Based on value, its share fell two percentage points, though it still remained massive at 43%.

The fall in value market share indicates the price pressure the company is facing and also that the contribution of higher-priced devices to its overall sales is probably slowing.

Still, analysts recommend Samsung to focus on low-end devices by increasing the range of products as future growth will be in this segment.

Expected to launch in August, Samsung and Intel's baby , Tizen has been delayed till 2014

Samsung delays development of TizenLast year, Samsung teamed up with Intel and the Linux Foundation to develop Tizen, and open-source operating system for mobile devices. Tizen is one of a few new operating systems (including Firefox OS) to compete with Android for the non-iOS smartphone market. Now, it appears that Samsung may have softened on ditching Android in favor of Tizen.Samsung has been working on the Tizen mobile operating system platform along with Intel. In recent past, Samsung was rumored of dropping the development of Tizen based devices. However, now DigiTimes , quoting its sources, said that Samsung has just slowed down the development of Tizen mobile OS and not dropping it entirely.

Samsung's executive vice president, Lee Young Hee had informed Bloomberg that Tizen based smartphones can be expected in August-September this year. These Tizen smartphones will be of high-end category. Now since we are in August, there is no sign of the Tizen-based high-end smartphone from Samsung.

Tizen mobile platform is based on the Linux Kernel and is expected to launch with thousands of Apps . Even if the first Tizen smartphone boasts of mind-blowing specifications, they would be futile without the app eco-system.

Tizen project is being backed by Samsung and Intel together. We can now expect the Tizen devices sometime early 2014.

The delay is reasonable since the planned shift would benefit rivals in the Android camp, including LG Electronics, HTC, Sony Mobile Communications, and Huawei, among others, and so there is no reason for Samsung to push ahead with Tizen at the moment, argued the sources.
Additionally, given that Android has accounted for nearly 80% of the global smartphone market and leads other platforms in terms of popularity, maturity and ecosystem, as well as the fact that Samsung has incorporated Android into its smartphones, tablets, DSCs and notebooks, the possibility is low for Samsung to shift from Android to Tizen overnight barring a drastic overhaul in strategy for Android by Google, the sources commented.

Samsung has announced to offer the Galaxy Grand Duos GT-I9082 smartphone in two more colour options for the Indian consumers. Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos is already available in Metallic Blue and Elegant White options. The two new colours of the smartphone are Luxury Brown and Wine Red. SammyHub reported about the listing of two new colours at the Samsung India estore .Samsung India’s official online store lists the two phones with a price tag of Rs. 20,800 (about $342) and that money also gives you two Flip covers for free, worth Rs. 2,798 ($46).

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos is a dual-SIM smartphone running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Nature UX running on top of it. This smartphone supports 3G network SIM and 2G network SIM modules together. Samsung uses dual-core 1.2 GHz mobile processor with Broadcom Videocore graphic chip. It packs 1 GB RAM and offers only 8 GB on-board storage with memory card slot.

The Galaxy Grand Duos has a 5-inch LCD display with 480x800 pixel resolution. At the back, Samsung has placed 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED Flash. This camera can record 1080p HD video. In the front it has 2 megapixel camera. This smartphone packs 2100 mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Grand duos key specifications

  • 5-inch WVGA display
  • Android 4.1.2
  • 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera
  • 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot

Samsung is offering the two new variants at Rs 20,800 including two flip covers worth Rs 2798 for free. This phone is set to get the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update anytime soon.

Samsung Galaxy Grand and Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos get their final update, Android 4.2.2

Even as Android 4.3 Jelly Bean starts to make its way into Nexus devices and the latest smartphone models, some slightly older phones are still being updated to Android 4.2.Announced initially for India last January, the Galaxy Grand DUOS is simply a dual SIM variant of the Galaxy Grand which, in turn, was announced in December 2012. Despite the name, the phone’s specs are not so grand but not so terrible either. Running on an unnamed 1.2 GHz dual core processor with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, the phone’s biggest drawback is it’s 5.0-inch display, which only supports a resolution of 480×800 pixels.Well, the saga of the mid-range devices receiving an official taste of Android 4.2 before the high-end ones continues: Samsung had announced that the upgrade cycle for its Galaxy Grand smartphone would officially end with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The last major update for the device is now seeding in Russia and the South Korean manufacturer is expected to roll out the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean ROM globally in the coming days. This comes after Samsung updated the Galaxy S II Plus, Galaxy Note 8.0, and the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 to the newer Jelly Bean iteration.
The update’s build number is I9105PXXUBMG8, which is newer than the build that earlier leaked for the Grand.
The latest update for the Samsung Galaxy Grand brings cool features such the lock screen widgets, advanced toggles menu, daydream screensaver, improved task switching and a few minor tweaks to enhance the overall user experience.
As one can expect, the update also brings a few software goodies from the Galaxy S4, the company's flagship smartphone
The firmware update files have been pushed out via Over-The-Air (OTA) and Samsung KIES software. Check your device’s notification panel or connect it with your computer and run KIES to verify the availability of new firmware versions for your device.
Here are the update details:
  • Model Name: Galaxy Grand Duos
  • Model Version: GT-I9082
  • OS Version: Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • Build Date: 29.07.2013
  • PDA: I9082XXUBMGA
  • If you didn’t get the OTA Update on your device, then you shouldn’t panic as we will post a ‘how-to’ guide that you can use to update your Galaxy Grand Duos to Android 4.2.2. For this you will need the Odin app and then simply flash it over your current firmware. The new XXUBMGA Android 4.2.2 build is unbranded which means that you can flash it for any Galaxy Grand Duos device that is factory unlocked. The file has been uploaded and released on SamMobile‘s web site. Note that if you flash this file on any Grand Duos device that is not from Russia, then you might lose all data from your device.
Also, the Android 4.2.2 XXUBMGA firmware update will be released only for devices that are 100% stock, as you won’t get the OTA Update notification in case your device is rooted or running any custom ROMs. Do you own a Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos? If you do, then did you receive the update? Users who managed to update their devices with the new firmware build should start testing all of its new features and see if there are any big improvements from the previous firmware build. BlackBerry joins hands with Samsung, will offer BBM on Samsung Apps earlier than Google Play

World's No 1 smartphone maker, Samsung has now joined hands with BlackBerry to bring the later's BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service for its Galaxy range of devices. Notably, BlackBerry is expected to launch the BBM service on Android and iOS platforms this year itself . However, by this move, Samsung is perhaps hoping to give some early mover advantage to its Galaxy range of devices. It’s a hint at what BlackBerry wants to do with BBM, now that it’s opening access to its proprietary messaging platform.
BBM has long been a staple in terms of one-to-one communication on mobile devices, and recently BlackBerry debuted BBM Groups, which allow for one-to-many broadcasts using the same messaging tools BBM users are used to. Especially in some key developing markets, including Indonesia and Africa, BBM has underpinned not only communication, but local commerce and business as well as a pretty much universal means of communication that’s more reliable, more affordable and potentially more trustworthy than SMS.The tag-team promotional efforts are telling: they show that not only is BlackBerry releasing its messenger for users on iOS and Android, it’s going to be actively involved in promoting that availability, even where it seems to run counter to its own interests. Samsung benefits here by being able to offer users new to its platform a familiar and trusted means of communication, giving them even more reason to continue to migrate away from dedicated BlackBerry devices; what BlackBerry gains isn’t so immediately apparent.
BlackBerry is looking at a dwindling user base, both for its devices and across its services, so what it gains from the deal is access to a growth market. Giving up the BBM platform advantage may cause some to scratch their heads, but it’s not much of an advantage anymore, which is clear from the dwindling BlackBerry market share. At this point, it matters little if the company adds fuel to the fire by expanding availability to iOS and Android devices.
In terms of potential upside, BlackBerry could lock in more users for a platform that could become very valuable in terms of data, advertising and other initiatives like BBM Money. If, in partnering with competitors to reach more users, it makes it easier for a few platform-jumpers, that’s a small price to pay at this stage in the game.

The app will be available from the Google Play store and will be a part of the Samsung messaging hub as well.

BlackBerry joins hands with Samsung; to bring BBM for Galaxy devices

Announcing the partnership, Samsung Electronics' Africa vice president and chief operating officer, George Ferreira said: "At Samsung we are all about collaboration, innovation and driving consumer experience based on choice, value and customization to suit every lifestyle. As such, bringing a top tier messaging service such as BBM is another way that we are expanding the catalogue of our messaging services and offering customers an amazing way to stay instantly connected with colleagues, friends and family."

The BBM application for Samsung Galaxy devices will first be made available in Africa and gradually in other parts of the world but Samsung has not cited any particular reason for the same. Samsung has also not said much about the BBM service that is to be made available for Galaxy devices.
At launch, the app will be available for download from the Samsung and Google Play Stores, at no cost.
However, as reported earlier, the BBM Android version is expected to bring chatting facility with multi-person chats and voice note sharing or voice messaging. Along with that the applications will also include BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users would be able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more with rest of the participants in one go. So all in all the BBM application aims at competing with Whatsapp and other similar apps.

Samsung SmartWatch : Samsung Galaxy Gear

After Sony and Google, Samsung is also reported to be working on its own version of a smart watch. Though Samsung has not said anything officially about its smart watch, it has filed a trademark for an accessory under the name 'Galaxy Gear,' which is now speculated to be a smart watch.

The trademark has been spotted on the website of USPTO (United States Patent and Trade Office).

Samsung smart watch to be called Galaxy Gear

Earlier, Samsung's executive vice president Lee Young Hee hinted at the existence of the smart watch by saying, "We've been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

However, what features and functionalities Samsung will be adding to the watch is still to be seen. Samsung's smart watch is also expected to come with newer functionality like a miniature IR remote control.

HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S IV Google Play editions get Android 4.3 update

The Google Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are receiving an OTA update that will upgrade them to Android 4.3.
The update arrives merely a week after it was officially announced and started rolling out for the Nexus devices. In fact, many of the Nexus devices are still to receive the update, so you can say the Google Play editions are more or less on par with the Nexus devices in terms of receiving updates. After Samsung and HTC shared their respective Android 4.3 source code for their Google Play edition phones, the OTA update for both devices started rolling out. Samsung build for the Galaxy S4 weighs in at 150.7MB while the HTC One’s is a but heftier at 185.5MB. The Android 4.3 update for both phones delivers Bluetooth Smart, OpenGL ES 3.0 for better 3D graphics, dial pad auto-completion and a few more technical changes like security and network enhancements. Other tweaks include larger app icons, a functional IR blaster on the HTC One and Bluetooth tethering on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

When Google announced the Google Play edition of the S4, they promised quick updated along with a stock Android experience. These are two of the main reasons to get these devices over their standard versions that come with OEM customizations and are bound to receive the 4.3 update much, much later.
The Android 4.3 update was announced last week at an event, alongside the new Nexus 7 tablet and the Chromecast media streaming device. Although not a major update, it brings features such as restricted user profiles (only on tablets), Bluetooth Low Energy profile, virtual surround sound, autocomplete for dialpad, improved keyboard, OpenGL ES 3.0 support and a handful of other things. You can find a list of Android 4.3 features here.
Over and above these features, the Android 4.3 update enables Bluetooth tethering on the Galaxy S4 and the IR port on the One.

Another unusual feature of the Moto X, apart from the customization option, is that it's always listening for its owner's voice. Most smartphones offer voice control, but it's usually activated by pressing a button.
Moto X comes with a 4.7-inch touch screen. It runs on a no-frills implementation of Google's Android operating system (Android 4.2.2). This is in contrast to the phones from Samsung and HTC, which put their own stamp on the software with various add-ons.
he smartphone has a 10-megapixel camera at the back, and a 2-megapixel on front. It comes in 16 or 32GB memory options. There is no option to expand, however, Google is offering buyers 50GB storage free on Google Drive for two years.
Moto X dimensions are height: 5.09 inch; width: 2.57 inch; depth: 0.41 inch. The smartphone measures 0.41 inch at its thickest point and weighs 130g.

Moto X comes with a non-user replaceable battery. It offers a talk time of 13 hours, according to the manufacturer.

Google Moto X runs on a 1.7 gigahertz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. Motorola developed twin lower-powered chips to run alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro main processor. The multi-chip system is reportedly designed to save battery life by letting the processor sleep while the lower-power chips work in the background.

The Moto X is due for US release in late August. It will also launch in Canada and Latin America in the same month. The Moto X is going on sale at all four wireless carriers in the US — Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Moto X will have a starting price of $199 in the United States if bought along with a two-year service contract with a telecom service company. Initially, only AT&T will offer the customization option, but Google said it hopes to make it available across all carriers soon. The company will offer 18 different back covers ranging in colour from "spearmint" to "cabernet," a choice of black or white fronts and seven different metallic accents for details like the volume button. That makes for 252 possible style variations of the phone.

The Moto X is the first smartphone to be assembled in the US. Though many phones are designed in the US, the vast majority of phones are assembled in Asia.

Motorola has become marginalized in the global smartphone market, taking just 1 per cent of recent sales, according to research firm IDC. Google has slashed Motorola's workforce to 4,600 people, down from 20,300 last year.

Samsung working on 2 large screen Tablets

Samsung has covered almost all kinds of existing tablet screen sizes, but it looks like the South Koreans are planning to take its tablets another step further. According to the popular tipster evleaks, Samsung is working on a 12.2-inch tablet with the model number “SM-P900″.
The Samsung SM-P900 is said to feature a 12.2-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. Aleaked user agent profile had earlier suggested a mysterious device with a similar resolution, so SM-P900 could well be a device in the making.
Additionally, the screen size has also been spotted on the Indian shipping website Zauba, which comes with the model number “SM-P905″ (could well be a cellular enabled variant of the SM-P900). The 12-2-inch tablet is also rumored to feature an Exynos 5 Octa processor along with S-Pen support.
Samsung is also said to be working on a 10-inch tablet with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, according to evleaks. The slate is obviously targeted at users who would prefer a slate with a smaller display, while maintaining the high resolution. The SM-P600 is reported to be powered by Snapdragon 800 processor to provide enhanced user experience.
The existence of the 10-inch tablet is again confirmed by user agent profile, which also suggests that the upcoming slate would run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Unfortunately, there is no official word on either the SM-P900 or SM-P600 at the moment. However, Samsung might announce the tablets along with the Galaxy Note III on September 4 in Berlin or during the IFA 2013 exhibition.
