Sony Xperia Z Ultra’s handwriting recognition tested with coin, pen and knife

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra was announced last month as the company’s first foray into the realm of phablets with its robust 6.5-inch screen.
Besides the new Triluminous display engine, the Z Ultra features Sony’s handwriting recognition technology, which lets you write on the display using nearly anything with tip less than 1mm in diameter. This latest video takes a closer look at exactly what does and doesn’t work as a writing device – from a set of keys to Stanley knives.
Most things worked fairly well, and it’s good to see that the key worked very well, especially since it’s one thing you’ll most likely have on hand in a pinch. Oddly enough, the mechanical pencil didn’t register at all, neither did the plastic ruler, and that goes without saying for the Stanley knife – although we recommend you don’t use the latter even if it did work. Good news is, even if many of these didn’t make for great stylus alternatives, they didn’t damage the display either, which means the Xperia Z Ultra certainly won’t be an easy to scratch device.
Either way, you’ll be able to try all of these and more soon enough, as the Xperia Z Ultra is set to hit Europe in September and Asia this month.

Sony to Launch the phablet Xperia Z ULtra in Asia first

The pieces of the Xperia Z Ultra availability puzzle are finally starting to fall in place. Yesterday we heard that will be the phablet is expected to hit on September 13, but it appear Britain won't be the first market to get it. We've now received news that the monstrously spec'd 6.4" device from Sony will be available in Hong Kong for HK$6198 (€609) by the end of July. Preorders can be made from Sony's own HK portal. You can also can get the device bundled with a protective case for a limited time. Keep in mind that this is for the HSPA+ version (C6802), so if you plan on exporting the Xperia Z Ultra to your home 4G-enabled market, it's not going to support LTE. For most of us, though, we'll have to wait until September for the LTE version (C6833) of the Xperia Z Ultra to go on sale. European pricing is rumored to start at about €629. It has not been much time when the Sony Xperia Z Ultra was announced at the Mobile Asia Expo 2013 in Shanghai and the next big thing is already set to hit the Indian market. The device was seen with a ‘Coming Soon’ tag on online retailer Saholic and this made everybody curious. When asked, the retail has suggested that the Xperia Z Ultra would be available for sale from 31st July, 2013. And it is not just Saholic which has listed the device; even the Sony India website has the device on display with the ‘coming soon’ tag. As the sales of large screen smartphones have been highly dominant in the Southeast Asian markets, Sony had announced that it would be launching the behemoth in Singapore, Indonesia and China and a few other markets in July and August and the smartphone would see a European launch in September. The Xperia Z Ultra has a 6.44 inch full HD 1080p display with TRILUMINOS technology that is sported by the Sony Bravia HDTVs. The phone is powered by a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 processor and 2 GB RAM. The phone is even IP58 certified and is water and dust resistant. Another prominent feature on the phone is its X-Reality feature which would even upscale low quality content to 1080p display. The phablet runs the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS and has some of Sony’s proprietary apps too including Sony’s Walkman app, Movies app and Album app. The phone has an 8 megapixel rear camera with the ability to record HD videos. There is still no official disclosure about the price of the phablet.

Sony Honami photo showing Camera UI surfaces

Sony Honami, another image has popped up showing off the new camera interface of the anticipated next Sony flagship. Now the 20MP sensor and the redone camera interface aren't exactly news - the latter is even available for current Xperia flagships via a leaked ROM, but it's the first we see it running on the actual phone. The above image also reveals that Sony has been hard at work trying to match the smartphone camera offerings by competing manufacturers like Samsung, and, more recently, Nokia. Back to the Sony Honami - the smartphone is said to feature Sony's G-lens and BIONZ image processing for its 1/2.3" image sensor. The device will have 5-inch 1080p display and will be running on a Snapdragon 800 chipset with a 2.2 GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. There will be 16 GB of expandable storage and the whole thing will be powered by a 3000 mAh battery. Like most recent high-end Sony smartphones, the Honami will feature IP57 dust and water resistance.

Sony Xperia i1 Honami packs 20MP under its hood

Japanese tech giants ,Sony's upcoming cameraphone or (phamera as i say it) flagship has been spotted in few leaked images earlier and now, the specifications of the device have been leaked. Samsung and Nokia have made their camera-smartphone or phamera , how can sony stay back. The Sony Xperia Honami will reportedly sport a 5-inch display of 1080p resolution. The smartphone is going to be powered by a 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and feature 2 GB of RAM. The 20 megapixel Exmor RS main camera will feature Sony G-lens and BIONZ image processor, but its sensor will measure 1/2.3" rather than the previously rumored 1/1.6". The impressive snapper will be joined by a 2 megapixel front facing snapper. The smartphone will have 16 GB of expandable storage to save all those shots and will draw its juice from a 3,000mAh battery. Sony Xperia Honami is said to be IP57 certified, which it is completely dust-protected and it will withstand a meter of water for 30 minutes. The Xperia Honami reportedly measures 144 x 73.9 x 8.3mm and will come with a great set of connectivity options along with latest version of the Android OS - 4.2. The upcoming flagship smartphone from Sony is expected to compete against the likes of other camera-phones such asSamsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and, more importantly, the Nokia Lumia 1020. Sony is set to unveil its Honami smartphone at its press event on September 4 at the IFA expo in Berlin. Alongside the mouthwatering processor, screen and camera specs, and now a claimed camera app screenshot from the Honami reveals that a 20 MP unit might be indeed chilling inside Sony's next big thing, just as speculated. At the full resolution, the phone can apparently take 4:3 photos, with 16:9 going down to 8 MP. We still don't know whether there will be some sort of pixel oversampling tech like in Nokia's PureView technology, like it was whispered in the beginning.  With all the latest leaks trickling down, prototypes are obviously in the hands of people that like to brag, so samples shouldn't be far behind. We're a little more than a month away from a flood of gadget news at IFA in Berlin, and we have a sneaking suspicion that the phone's camera UI looks like, and now a leak from the Taiwanese site ePrice says the device has a 20.7-megapixel ExmorRS sensor that's the same size as the one in the Galaxy Camera and other point-and-shoots. It's also paired with a "Sony G-Lens," though hopefully not one as bulbous as some others we've seen. Other specs include a 5-inch 1080p display with the same Triluminos technology that's in the Xperia Z Ultra, Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon 800, 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded with microSD and a fairly massive 3,000mAh battery. If the alleged spec sheet after the jump is to be believed, then the Lumia 1020 and GS4 Zoom might have to face some serious competition. We’ve seen several claims suggesting variously 13-megpaixel, 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensors using Sony’s Exmor RS back-illuminated sensor (BSI) technology. For a while there’s been talk of Sony Cybershot functionality and allegedly the phone will feature a Cybershot camera UI and both a dual-LED and Xenon flash. The sensor allegedly has a 2/3-inch aperture and one wildcard rumour we’ve seen recently says you’ll be able to swap the lenses around. It’s also rumoured to use a Mobile BIONZ image processing technology to enhance things further and there’ll be a dedicated camera button. The front-facing secondary camera is a 2.2-megapixel Exmor R sensor with 1080p video capture. The operating system will of course be Google’s Android software and the latest version, 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, has been mentioned specifically to be onboard. It seems a given it will have a Sony interface layer on top and while we’ve previously seen the ‘Sony UI’ on the Xperia Z and others, the Xperia i1 will apparently debut the so-called ‘Xperia UI’. Whether this is a dramatic change from the previous interface or something very similar remains to be seen. There’s been no word on when Sony might release its Xperia i1 handset, but it was revealed through leaks at the same time as the Xperia ZU, which was launched on June 25. Sony has another event lined up in Paris on July 4, which could possibly see the Xperia i1 Honami getting an official announcement. We think it’s quite likely we’ll see the Xperia i1 appear by the end of August at the very latest. After launch, we expect the device to hit the market within the following month, so that could put us into August or September before it’s on shelves. In terms of pricing, again there are no details given but considering Sony’s previous flagships have retailed for around the £500 mark SIM-free – we suspect we’ll see a repeat of this pricing plan on the Xperia i1.

Sony highlights Water resistance in latest commercials

Ever since the release of its IP57-certified Xperia Z flagship, water resistance has been on Sony’s lips almost every time the word Xperia gets mentioned. The latest series of ads aims to emphasize just that by showing a cute water droplet looking for friendship.Albeit somewhat childish, the ads do get the message across, and are rather endearing in their own way – if you can get past what is essentially an inadvertent serial killing protagonist. Check it out. Sony Mobile Hong Kong recently released a number of very cute animations for the Xperia range. The videos entitled “Water is My Friend” shows a water character who desperately wants a friend. However, every phone he tries to help, or touch, ends up biting the dust (you can see where we’re going with this). Then along comes the Sony Xperia with its water resistant qualities and the two are friends forever, it is actually quite touching believe it or not. The videos are well worth a watch and you can see Sony trying to cement its position in the market as being the go-to handset for those looking for a water resistant handset. Check out all three videos below.
